Middle of Nowhere

Filed under: Techy — gardener @ 10:30 am

When I was home for the holidays, I noticed that I had little to no cell reception at mom and diddy’s home. They do live in what could be considered the ‘middle of nowhere’ and even they have hit and miss reception with their provider in the ‘boonies’. If we want to get them at home- we always have to call the house. I’m wondering if cell signal boosters would actually help their signal while at home? It would give them the opportunity to have their phones with them while working in the yard without actually having to miss important calls. It’s definitely worth doing the research, especially if it will make mom and diddy more accessable when they are out in the ‘back 40’.

Time to Update-

Filed under: Techy — gardener @ 1:22 pm

I have been receiving messages here and there that most of my technology needs ‘updating’.   My blogging software needs updating- several apps on my iPhone need updating- including the Operating system, so it looks like I’m going to spend a little time tomorrow in front of the desktop updating my iTunes and then updating my phone.

I am the world’s worst about putting these sort of things off. I’m on top of so much and don’t let things get past me- but updates seem to be at the bottom of my priority list.   Maybe I should mix things up and start at the bottom of my ‘to do’ list and work upward.

Thinking- Again

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. I know- no surprise, right? I like to think, sometimes too much and tend to be pretty analytical. That is often a good thing, but there are also times when it isn’t.

In this case- I think it’s a good thing. Mom and my BFF have been spending some time together once a week and they’ve been coming up with ideas on designs for applique’s and also embroidery. This is a GREAT thing- especially since I can’t be there to help encourage and inspire mom. She is very talented, but underestimates herself, so S. being there with her, pushing her is really producing results.

Mom and I have talked about going into business together for a while. Actually it would be HER business, but I would handle the web aspects of things. She would do the work, and I’d keep the emails and orders flowing smoothly. S’s husband is a creative genius and he’s in the process of creating a logo for her. Personally, I think it should incorporate a tulip somewhere in the mix.

It brings me joy to see others that I love succeed and do well with things they are passionate about. I want to see everyone live their potential. Those are things that make me smile!

Companies and Social Media

Filed under: Techy — gardener @ 12:02 pm

This morning I took part in a survey that asked if I thought social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter were good for companies to use to market their products and services. Personally, I’m a ‘fan’ of many of my favorite products through both Facebook and Twitter, which makes it easy to streamline ‘news’ and product information.

I don’t have the time to visit all of my favorite product websites to see if they are introducing new products, or if they have a promotion going on. I love that I can find the latest information right in my ‘feed’ and click if there’s something that catches my eye that I’d like more information about.

I actually felt that most people would feel this way. I’m a fan of several sites who offer a daily recipe or idea and I love getting them. Sometimes I read them and sometimes I don’t- it really depends on what’s going on that particular day or if the recipe interests me. It’s the same with some of the tech company websites I’m a fan of. They delivery daily tips and sometimes those tips are helpful and educational.

It surprised me to find that I seemed to be more the exception than the rule and that many people either a- hated social media all together or b- found that being a ‘fan’ of a particular brand meant they were giving the company free exposure and advertising.

I was also surprised to find that some said they didn’t want everyone who was on their Facebook page to know what type of products that they liked- that they found it to be intrusive and an invasion of their privacy. I found this to be VERY odd- and wondered if that were the case, why they were even on Facebook in the first place- but to each his own.

I would love to know what you think.

Are you a fan of companies using social media to contact their customers and potential clients? Why or why not?

Simple Amusements

About once a month (sometimes more), I go through all my email addresses and delete mail that I no longer need. I have a really bad habit of keeping mail even after reading it, so one of my goals this year was to stop doing that and keep my inbox ‘clutter-free’. When I go through the mail, I also go through my spam folders to make sure that nothing has ended up in the wrong place and then I delete the spam. It never ceases to amaze me at just how many natural male enhancement emails I have, and how they are certain they can help me enhance my manhood. I wonder what they would think if they knew that I didn’t have any manhood to enhance? I know- I know. It’s the little things that tend to amuse me and yes, this is one of those.

Time for Something New

Filed under: Shop til ya Drop,Techy — gardener @ 5:00 am

Desere was over last week for coffee and during the course of our conversation, she told me that the desktop computer that the boys have been using to do their homework and play games had stopped working. We talked about the possible causes, but we both decided that while it is possible that it could be repaired, that she’d really like to get rid of the desktop and buy a smaller, more portable computer, such as one of the tablet computers that are so popular right now. Not only will it free up space where the desktop now sits, but it will also mean the boys can do their homework on the couch or in other places, which makes it much more convenient. She’s looking for good deals and even though she hasn’t told the boys, will probably buy one in the next couple fo weeks as a surprise to them. I know they’ll be thrilled, and she’ll be glad to have her laptop back as her own.

Convincing the Folks

Filed under: Shop til ya Drop,Techy — gardener @ 9:45 am

Now that we’ve got mom and diddy set up with new computers, I’ve found that in spite of them not wanting to get rid of their old trusty (dinosaur) printer that it just doesn’t seem to be working the way it should with the new computers. It’s old, so I’m pretty sure it isn’t a compatability issue but more of an age issue, so while I’m sick I’m going to look online at some brother printers and see if I can’t find something that they’ll be happy with that will be great with ink. I’m sure I’ll find something without any problems and then it will be a question of convincing the folks to make the purchase.

Just What I Need

Since ‘Santa’ gave me a Kindle for Christmas, one of my favorite things to do is browse through the books that are available. A few nights ago I found a download that shows some good ab workouts for the bargain price of less than 2.00. Needless to say- I bought it on the spot and have been checking it out. Granted, I haven’t actually started using it yet, but I will be, and soon. I WILL kiss this last 40 pounds goodbye this year. It’s time to stop talking and start doing.

Techies

Filed under: Techy — gardener @ 10:07 am

Since I’ve been home and got mom and dad set up with new netbooks, I’ve also set them up a wireless network that they both seem to love. The one thing I find to be a little weird though is that when I’m sitting outside in the back yard, that I have a better Wi-Fi connection than I do when I’m actually in the living room of the house. It definitely makes sitting outside with the computer easy and on sunny days- it’s perfect. I may turn mom and diddy into techies yet.

Learning Something New

Filed under: Shop til ya Drop,Techy — gardener @ 9:47 am

Now that mom and diddy are set up with their new computers (thank goodness) and the dinosaur computer is sitting in the corner waiting to have pictures moved, they are really excited about the fact that they have a network and they can transfer information from one computer to another. When I first set everything up- mom asked if she and diddy were going to need an it degree in order to make their way through the network, but they found out that it was much easier than they thought. I still have a couple of things to teach them, but I’m sure that they’ll be able to learn it without any problems.
