The Importance of UNbusy

I hear a lot about how ‘busy’ people are.    I’m unsure why- but it’s one of my little pet peeves-  I’ve asked myself why that is on more than one occasion and the one thing that comes to mind time and time again is because we’re all busy in various forms.    Rarely are we all the same type of busy-   after all, I’m definitely not the same kind of busy as my friends with small children, or one of my friends training for a marathon, but there is always ‘something’ to do-   somewhere to be-   and so forth.

I ran into a neighbor the other day I haven’t seen in a while-  We exchanged hellos and I asked how she was doing-    Her response was the same as it always is-   BUSY!   only this time she said it three times-   Busy Busy Busy.     I responded with, ‘Aren’t we all?’    She immediately started talking about how now it was the holiday season and things would be even crazier and busier-  etc..    so I intentionally shifted the conversation-   from the rush rush rush of being hectic- to ask her if she would be visiting her family for the holidays.    She said no- and immediately went into to how busy she was so she couldn’t make it happen for longer than 9 days so she was going to wait until she was ‘less busy’.     I smiled and wished her a good holiday season as we parted ways.

Sometimes, busy is a reason we use not to be present in our current situations.    After all- when we keep our mind busy jumping from one task to the other, we don’t have time to sit still with ourselves do we?      Before you think or even ask-  NO, I’m not referring to my neighbor, or anyone in particular-   I’m making a general observation about myself, as that’s the only person I can talk about with any authority.

When I find myself wanting to disconnect and not feel-  I make myself busy-   Busy with mental projects, physical projects, travel, baking, work, work, eating.. anything that keeps me from being ‘still’ and in the moment.    It means I’m running from something I don’t want to face.   Sometimes it’s something small-   sometimes it’s something life changing and I’ve not quite got to the point where I’m ready to create a plan-  so I avoid with busy.    It doesn’t change anything-   it just means I’m prolonging whatever it is I need to deal with.

I am not suggesting that a busy life means you’re avoiding something.    We have more to do than ever- but when we constantly NEED to be doing something, anything-   and can’t stop and really be still with ourselves without it being very uncomfortable, then something is not quite right.

How do we find balance?    We schedule it-  just like any other appointment.      Time to exercise, write, meditate, color, create.   Whatever ‘IT’ is that brings you to your center-   time that you spend with YOU.    You are the best company for yourself.    Think about what is working in your life-   what isn’t.     Don’t beat yourself up when something isn’t working the way you wanted or hoped.  Instead, be proactive in creating a new plan that may work better.    Keep trying until you start receiving the results you desire.   It may mean starting over and regrouping several times, but keep trying.

It’s something I am doing myself.    We don’t love ourselves enough.  We aren’t kind enough to ourselves.   We need to be kinder, more gentle and sometimes we do need to be tough with ourselves and force ourselves to sit and ‘be’ with no one other than ourselves.    It is the only way to learn who you really are-   what’s holding you back-  what drives you-   and what brings joy to your soul.

Everything is about finding the right balance that works for you-    and understanding that it will change as we do.  It’s fluid, like water.

During this holiday season-  I am taking extra steps to find the balance-  to reconnect with myself and stop automating through so many things in life and to intentionally NOT be busy from time to time-    Try it.   It will be hard at first, especially if you’ve got an attachment to being busy-   but once you sit with yourself for a while-  you’ll realize there is no better company than you.

Month of Gratitude

Filed under: Gratitude — gardener @ 8:48 am

The daylight hours are slowly getting shorter and this weekend we ‘Fall back’-  which means Winter isn’t far behind.    I admit-  this is my favorite time of the year, and today I spent a while walking through the forest taking photos of leaves, mushrooms, and anything else that caught my eye-  including my favorite canine, JJ.

I could eat soup daily for the entire rest of the year, and outside of the occasional special occasion meal, I’d probably not get tired of it.   There is something about this time of the year that brings me great joy.   Even the rain makes me smile.

It’s also the month of Thanksgiving and I’ve noticed many people, myself included making lists of gratitude in order to focus on the things we tend to take for granted in the every day.   It’s a good thing to pause, take inventory on the blessings in your life and appreciate them.

What are you grateful for this month?

Music for the Soul

My best friends husband is a talented trumpet player. There is something about trumpet music that soothes my soul and has me forgetting about everything around me and thinking about what life would have been like back in the days when Jazz clubs were extremely popular in New Orleans. Granted, you still find them there, but not like it was ‘back in the day’. I love hearing him play or anyone who has a grasp on really playing great trumpet music. It soothes the soul. Don’t you think?

Leaning into Fall

You ever have one of those days that call for comfort food? Today is one of those days for me. I don’t know what it is- but the cooler temperatures and the shorter hours of daylight seem to have me feeling like I want to slow down- to enjoy a good book- to have a little comfort food.

img_9368Since I was also cooking for my mother-in-law, who just got out of the hospital, I decided to cook some Dutch comfort food. Kale with potatoes, mashed together. The Dutch call it borenkool stampot, but I simply call it good. I tried to make mine a little healthier- as it is traditionally served with smoked sausage, so I ate mine with seasoned turkey breast and my kale ratio was much higher than the potatoes. I did add bacon, but hey- we all need to indulge on occasion, right?

I’m still squeezing the last bit out of summer though, and I’ll be making some lemon cupcakes for an upcoming ‘harvest party’ this weekend. To balance out the harvest- I am also making a Pumpkin Spice Latte cake- which I can’t wait to try- Have a great week!

Wondering About

Filed under: Food for Thought,Life — gardener @ 10:29 am

I was looking through some of the old comments on this blog and I came across a few from an old online friend whom I haven’t heard from in many years now. I often wonder what happened to her and have tried on several occasions to look for her but with no avail. The few mutual friends we have also don’t seem to have any idea what happened to her.

“Sunny” Nelson- if you happen to see this- know that you are being thought of and you are missed. I hope you are well.

Sounds of Silence

Filed under: Food for Thought,Life — gardener @ 10:15 am

There are some days when I crave silence and noise of any type literally tosses my train of thought off the rails. Other days, I can’t wait to check out one of my favorite music places and follow the click here to get to my favorite play list. Music soothes me, but at the same time- sometimes I prefer silence. My husband, on the other hand always needs to ‘hear’ something. What about you? Which do you prefer?

Have a great week!

Reaching Within

The last few weeks I’ve had this discombobulated feeling. I have SO many projects and thoughts happening- that I am finding it difficult to wade through them all and actually feel as though I am making any sort of headway. I’ve tried various methods- and I still can’t seem to get ‘still’ with myself, so I’m going to try yet something else.

I believe a full disconnect from everything is in order- with a focus purely on myself and what I need to do- in order to gain balance and structure again in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I have a great life, but things are off balance and I recognize that, so it’s time to do something about it before it becomes too far out of whack.

What do you do to balance yourself?

Who Knew?

It never ceases to amaze me just how much knowledge Marcel has about music. We were out yesterday and ran into a neighbor, who happens to be a seasoned musician and they started this conversation about ns design which left me in the dust of understanding what they were talking about. When I asked him about it later- as in how and when did he become so knowledgeable, he said that it’s something he has always been interested in and that he enjoyed reading reviews and learning about different products and sound. Who knew? I learn something new about my husband each week.

Whole 30 – Take Two and Going Strong

Since my last post- several weeks ago, Marcel and I have embarked on the Whole 30 adventure together.  It’s my second time and his first.    We started on the 15th, and while he wanted to give it up at around day four-   he decided in the end to stick with it and he’s doing great now.

It has been a lot more time consuming this time.   Mostly because with BOTH of us doing it-  it means a LOT more meal prep time since he can’t take his usual sandwich to work.  That means egg muffin cups for work- and omelettes for breakfast.  It’s time consuming, but definitely worth it.

Plus this week we’ve had some really warm weather and that meant me spending a LOT of time in the kitchen yesterday meal prepping for salads for the rest of the week.    The fridge is stuffed to the brim with various greens, bacon, turkey breast, roasted tomatoes, roasted zucchini and eggplant, grated carrots and beets, boiled eggs and the list goes ON..   It makes it so simple to toss together a salad of our choosing and it’s delicious!

I haven’t asked Marcel many questions on whether he feels like Whole 30 is changing how he feels, because I believe it’s too early to tell.    I’ll give it a few more weeks, or maybe he’ll discover it on his own.   I’m definitely having a little more energy than I was before, but still not at the tiger blood stage I got to at around week 2 before.   I am waking up earlier in the morning and feeling more rested- but not sure if that’s from Whole 30 or the warm weather.   Time will tell.

Have you tried the Whole 30 plan?  What were your thoughts?  I would love to hear your experience.

Learning is Growing

Filed under: Life — gardener @ 10:29 am

The other day I was out walking with the dog and passed a new construction site where they are building a new shopping center.   I noticed they were putting something in the ground and the person I was walking with informed me that they were using what looked to be soil gas probes. Since I had never heard of them, I inquired as to what it may mean. I actually started talking at first about how cool I think it is that they would be probing for natural gas sources before they build, but they informed me that it wasn’t exactly what they were doing, instead it was more likely testing for toxic gases in the area or maybe to see if there were any toxic oils or gases in the soil from gas leaks or any kind of other toxic spill.

Since it was something new to me, I paused and observed them for a little while, but couldn’t really see what they were doing. Since it was so close to the ground, I couldn’t really see anything, so I didn’t ‘learn’ much in terms of observation. I did find it interesting though that these things occur and apparently more often than I would have even guessed.

My next question is what do they do when they find something with the probes? That’s a question that I don’t have the answer to yet, but one thing is for certain, I do intend to find out. After all, to know me is to know that I am always curious about things happening around me and wanting to learn something new. Even though this may be something that I never encounter again, having the knowledge and little understanding will satisfy my curiosity and who knows, maybe one day it’s knowledge that I’ll be able to use for something else. One never really knows.
