Soccer Sunday

I guess I should call this Soccer Sunday, because Marcel and Tom (Desere’s son) are watching what they are calling ‘the’ soccer match of the season. I’m not sure that I would agree with them, but I’ve been hearing a whole lot of screams coming from the living room, which assures me that their team is doing well.

In fact, as I’m typing this, Marcel slowly pushed the door open and held up two fingers. That means that his team has two points and the other team has none. Obviously this is a good thing. I don’t think I’ve ever known a person who loves soccer the way Marcel does. He loves soccer the way my diddy loves football and the way my brother loves baseball or golf.

It’s the little things that make him happy, and even though they are loud in there, I can’t help but smile at the joy something so simple brings him. It’s something we can all learn from, gaining joy and pleasure from the little things.

Caloric Breakdown

I was reading an article last night about calories and it showed a breakdown of calories, and I thought I’d share it with y’all. It was something that I knew already, but I hadn’t given much thought in a long time, and I was grateful for the reminder.

For those of us who are working on getting rid of the weight and living a healthier lifestyle (or trying to), I thought this may be of some interest to you.

Our bodies need carbs, proteins, healthy fats in order to give us fuel and function properly, but each of those calories aren’t created equally. The breakdown follows:

  • 1 gram of fat =   9 calories
  • 1 gram of carbohydrates=   4 calories
  • 1 gram of protien=   4 calories
  • 1 gram of alcohol=   7 calories
  • 1 gram of sugar=   4 calories

As you can see, there is a difference in the calorie count of these things.   Don’t avoid fat just because there are more calories per gram, but it is something that you want to use sparingly, AND make sure it’s ‘heart healthy’ fats-   Such as Olive Oil, nuts (walnuts, almonds- raw),  Omega 3 Fatty acids which are found in some fish.   It doesn’t mean eat all you want just because it’s ‘good for you’   but it’s fats that your body needs in moderation.

I think maybe I’ll do a series on calories, based on my own personal education and learning experiences.

Tax Time Again

It’s that time again- Tax Time. I’ve been putting off getting the taxes done for a few weeks now, and I finally decided that I may just try to do it myself for a change. I knew it would save close to $75 that I’d have to give the accountant, plus I figured if it was too hard, I could always let him do it. I ran a few things through the document scanning software, organized everything in order of how I thought I’d need it and I began. I had a pretty good idea of how our taxes should look, and my efforts were correct, I think. I send them in electronically, so if they aren’t correct, I’m sure I’ll hear something soon enough. In the meantime, I’ve been patting myself on the back for getting it done, and with time to spare.
